Famous for its rock art, Quinkan Country contains a large and dramatic body of prehistoric rock paintings. These galleries have been identified as being at least 15,000 years old and have been include on the Australian Heritage Estate and listed by UNESCO as being among the top 10 rock art sites in the world. People from many countries visit this remote location to view the rock art and gain some understanding of the Aboriginal stories associated with this magnificent sandstone landscape.
Guided Tours to a select number of the world renowned rock art sites are available from mid April until early December, and bookings can be made through the Quinkan & Regional Cultural Centre:
• Split Rock - 1 hr moderate walk 15mins each way or a 3 hr duration including a moderate 2hr walk.
• Mushroom Rock - 2.5 hr tour duration; Easy access for all
• Giant Horse – 3 hr duration – easy-moderate 10 min walk
• Giant horse & Mushroom Rock - 3.5 - 4 hr duration; Moderate walk 10 mins each direction
• The Quinkan Galleries - 2.5 - 3 hr duration; Reasonably easy access for all
The Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival is the premier celebration of Aboriginal culture in Cape York. The Festival is a biennial event celebrating & show-casing the culture of the Aboriginal people of Cape York Peninsula through song, dance ceremony and performance.
